Folios 8-11: case no 8, Dennis Gennings, aged 28, convict; sick or hurt, phthisis confirmata, labouring for some months under incipient phthisis, were it not that inspection of the convicts was hurried on board the hulk [this patient] would have been reject as unfit for voyage, he stated that he had been a soldier and for insubordination to his superior officer at the Island of Bermuda he was sentenced to seven years transportation, he was much addicted to the use of spirits whilst in the Army and at Bermuda he had frequent attacks of pneumonia which he never recovered; put on sick list 9 October 1839, died 5 December 1839 at 8 o'clock.
Folio 12: case no 7, George Trusley, aged 22, seaman; taken ill at sea; sick or hurt, chancres; put on sick list 8 October 1839, discharged 9 November 1839 to duty.
Folios 12-14: case no 2, James Thompson, aged 22, convict; taken ill at sea; sick or hurt, opthalmia; put on sick list 30 September 1839, discharged 20 November 1839 well.
Folio 14: ten cases of opthalmia occurred during the voyage to Hobart Town, but not so violent, they were all discharged cured without the slightest speck on the cornea or dimmess of vision remaining.
Folio 15: case no 92, Thomas Assilton, aged 23, convict; taken ill at sea; sick or hurt, diarrhoea crapulosa; put on sick list 27 November 1839, discharged 13 December 1839 cured.
Folio 15: 34 cases of diarrhoea of a milder character occuring during the voyage, with trifling variation.
Folios 16-17: case no 94, Philip Williams, aged 24, sail maker; taken ill at sea; sick or hurt, dysenteria; put on sick list 2 December 1839, discharged 13 January 1840 cured.
Folios 17-18: case no 66, Mr Henry Whitby, aged 20, 4th mate; taken ill at sea; sick or hurt, rheumatismus acutus; put on sick list 19 November 1839, discharged 5 December 1839 cured.
Folios 19-26: Blank.
Folio 27: nosological return of cases mentioned in the journal. (Note: 2 cases of 'impetigo' or watery tetter, and 1 case of catarrh, was by an oversight omitted in the return).
Folios 28-29: Surgeon's general remarks. After the surgeon received an appointment to the convict ship Canton at Somerset House on 24th August 1839, and joined her at Deptford on 27th, he reported of his joining the ship to Lieut Wentworth the agent of Transports, but he did not report himself to the Captain superintendent at the first instance, in which the surgeon personally expressed to Captain Sherriff [Captain superintendent] of his regret in not having reported to him [Captain Sherriff] on joining the ship. Afterwards the surgeon went on board the Leviathan hulk and arranged with the officer in command to inspect the convicts (in conjunction with Doctor Williams). On 5 September 1839 the Guard was received on board consisting of two commissioned officers and 40 rank and file of the 96th and 80th regiments. On the 14 September 1839, 240 male convicts were embarked on board from the Leviathan hulk. During the voyage there were no cases of scorbutus on board, as a result of the surgeon issuing lemon juice regularly to the convicts during the earlier part of the voyage.
