HO 42/28/53
1794 Jan 25
Folios 115-118. Memorandum from the Earl of Lauderdale enclosing a petition for presentation to the king from the inhabitants of Paisley, Renfrewshire. Enclosed is a petition from the merchants, manufacturers, traders and other inhabitants of Paisley and its neighbourhood, complaining of the devastating effect of the war on trade and manufacture, the availability of food and the cost of living. It points to the rapid growth of emigration, suggesting that the outflow would be even greater if shipping were available. It urges the restoration of peace, now that the explicit aim of the war has been achieved.
