Description

Duke of Newcastle to the chancellor of the exchequer. Sends copies of letters and papers given to him by Carteret received from the lords justices of Ireland regarding Wood's halfpence. The lords justices' letter raises new difficulties. The banks had refused to handle the halfpence and the Council (not the Privy Council), thought the matter best discussed in parliament. Suggests that Carteret be sent to Ireland without specific orders from the government but is to act on his own dexterity. (Draft).
