Description

Folio 50: James Harris, Seaman, aged 26; disease or hurt, pains in his limbs, cold shivering, a little headache, very thirsty, bowels open. Taken ill, 13 January 1799, at sea off Cadiz. Discharged to duty, 24 January 1799.

Folio 50: Richard Short, Seaman, aged 19; disease or hurt, pains in breast, headache, thirst, nausea. Taken ill, 17 January 1799, at anchor off Cadiz. Discharged to duty 24 January 1799.

Folio 51: William Frost, treatment continued. Discharged to duty, 20 February 1799.

Folio 52: Michael Kelly, Seaman, aged 38; disease or hurt, griping pains in bowels, with nausea and vomiting, has a full quick pulse, with a shiny kind of discharge coloured with blood, a frequent inclination to stool attended with tenesmus. Taken ill, 15 January 1799, at anchor off Cadiz. Discharged to duty, 28 February 1799.

Folio 53: William Westcott, Master at Arms, aged 50; disease or hurt, cold shivering, pain in head and back, griping pains in bowels, with purging. Taken ill, 18 January 1799, at anchor off Cadiz. Discharged to duty, 3 March 1799.

Folio 54: David Tucker, Boatswain's Mate, aged 29; disease or hurt, cold shivering, pain in his bowels with purging, general pains in limbs, thirst. Taken ill, 25 January 1799, at sea off Cadiz. Discharged to duty, 30 January 1799.

Folio 54: Richard Survin, Marine, aged 22; disease or hurt, cold shivering, pain in head and limbs, with griping and purging, the discharge a thin mucus with a little blood. Taken ill, 29 January 1799, at sea, off Cadiz. Discharged to duty, 6 February 1799.

Folio 54: James Atkinson, Quarter Master, age not recorded; disease or hurt, pain in limbs, thirst and vomiting. Taken ill, 3 February 1799, at sea off Cadiz. Discharged to duty, 11 February 1799.

Folio 55: John Minton, Boatswain's Mate, age not recorded; disease or hurt, pain in his breast and cough with a difficulty in respiration, appears a good deal debilitated. Taken ill, 23 January 1799, at sea off Cadiz. Discharged to duty, 12 March 1799. Remarks that from 13 February 1799 until discharged had no medicine except an opiate at night. Attention was paid to diet and cleanliness and since recovered he feels better than he has for many years.

Folio 56: Joseph Vandome, Marine, aged 26; disease or hurt, violent pains in his belly and sides, some headache, thirst. Taken ill, 30 January 1799, at sea off Cadiz. Discharged to duty, 4 February 1799.

Folio 56: Peter Bowen, Seaman, aged 43; disease or hurt, cold shivering, pain in [belly] and bowels, with frequent inclination to stool but without effect, hard, quick pulse, some nausea and great thirst. Taken ill, 4 February 1799, at sea off Cadiz. Treatment continues next folio. Died 15 February 1799. Had received a violent blow to his belly some years previously, from which he was slow to recover and which gave him frequent pain.

Folio 57: Thomas Winchester, Seaman, aged 29; disease or hurt, cold shivering, vomiting, pain in his legs and thighs, some griping in bowels, with costiveness. Taken ill, 7 February 1799, at sea near Cadiz. Discharged to duty, 13 February 1799.

Folio 57: Peter Bowen, treatment continued. Died 15 February 1799.

Folio 58: William Martin, Seaman, aged 26; disease or hurt, cold shivering, vomiting, pain in all his limbs, hard quick pulse, dry, hot skin with thirst. Taken ill, 16 February 1799, at sea near Gibraltar. Treatment continues folio 63. Died 3 March 1799.

Folio 59: Andrew MacDonald, Seaman, aged 39; disease or hurt, pains in head, back and breast, considerable degree of fever, hot dry skin, difficult respiration. Taken ill, 16 February 1799, at sea near Gibraltar. Discharged to duty, 16 March 1799.

Folio 60: John Collins, Carpenter's Mate, aged 34; disease or hurt, violent pains in stomach and bowels, sickness, headache with griping, a full, small, quick pulse, a small discharge by stool, principally mucus with some blood. Taken ill, 15 February 1799, at sea near Gibraltar. Discharged to duty, 9 March 1799. Very emaciated from hard drinking and of a bilious habit.

Folio 61: Daniel O'Leary, Marine, aged 54; disease or hurt, pain in his breast, difficulty of breathing, some little cough and headache. Taken ill, 17 February 1799, at sea, near Gibraltar. Discharged to duty, 4 March 1799.

Folio 61: Charles Doherty, Seaman, aged 32; disease or hurt, headache, thirst, nausea with vomiting. Taken ill, 12 March 1799, at anchor off Cadiz. Discharged to duty, 28 March 1799.

Folio 62: Francis Salmon, Marine, aged 24; disease or hurt, sickness at stomach, headache and pain in his limbs. Taken ill, 22 February 1799, Tetuan [Tetouan] Bay. Discharged to duty, 25 February 1799.

Folio 62: John Johnson, Marine, aged 26; disease or hurt, griping pains in bowels, purging and vomiting, considerable degree of fever with thirst. Taken ill, 24 February 1799, at sea off Cadiz. Discharged to duty, 17 March 1799.

Folio 63: William Martin, treatment continued. Died 3 March 1799.

Folio 63: James Peacefield, Seaman, aged 36; disease or hurt, great pain in belly, costiveness and thirst. Taken ill, 4 March 1799, at sea off Cadiz. Discharged to duty, 10 March 1799.

Folio 64: Thomas Dill, Seaman, aged 29; disease or hurt, pains in loins, some difficulty of respiration, white tongue, hard quick pulse, very thirsty. Taken ill, 10 March 1799, at sea near Cadiz. Died 30 March 1799. Had been subject to inflammatory complaints for some years, of a strong, plethoric constitution. Was greatly improved on 28 March 1799 but although cautioned against getting out of bed persisted in doing so. This brought on a sweat which in the surgeon's opinion killed him. Described as 'a black man and always very ungovernable and obstinate'.

Folio 65: John Rothwell, Seaman, aged 22; disease or hurt, cold shivering, pain in his head, vomiting and thirst. Taken ill, 22 March 1799, at sea off Cadiz. Died 25 March 1799.

Folio 65: Mr Thomas Quillon, Midshipman, aged 27; disease or hurt, cold shivering, pain in the bowels and headache. Taken ill, 28 March 1799, at anchor in Tetuan [Tetouan] Bay. Discharged to duty, 6 April 1799.

Folio 66: Thomas Murray, Seaman, aged 40; disease or hurt, headache, nausea pain in limbs. Taken ill, 24 March 1799, at sea off Cadiz. Discharged to duty, 11 April 1799.

Folio 66: James Watkinson, Quarter Master, aged 43; disease or hurt, griping pain in belly, frequent stools, the discharge mucus coloured with blood, some degree of fever. Taken ill, 12 April 1799, at anchor in Tetuan [Tetouan] Bay. Discharged to duty, 28 April 1799.

Folio 67: Thomas Slater, Marine, aged 25; disease or hurt, pain in bowels with constant inclination to go to stool, discharge little, shiny and mixed with blood. Taken ill, 27 March 1799, at anchor in Tetuan [Tetouan] Bay. Discharged to duty, 11 April 1799.
