Description

Folio 23: John Lovey, Seaman, aged 24; disease or hurt, lost the first joint of his left thumb in consequence of the lightning but can give no account in what manner, otherwise well. Taken ill, 29 October 1798, cruising off Cadiz. Discharged to duty, 1 December 1798.

Folio 23: Thomas Morgan, Seaman, aged 28; disease or hurt, struck by lightning on the left side, causing difficulty of respiration and considerable pain all over the abdomen. Taken ill, 29 October 1798, cruising off Cadiz. Treatment continues folio 28. Discharged to Gibraltar Hospital, 2 December 1798. The top mast was carried away and he being in the top the rigging fell on him, from which he complains of great pain in his back. Tension and pain in the abdomen.

Folio 24: Michael Moore, Seaman, aged 26; disease or hurt, violent blow from a handspike on the os parietal which lacerated the skin very much, pericranium detached for the space of an inch. Taken ill, 4 November 1798, cruising off Cadiz. Discharged to duty, 2 December 1798. F

Folio 26: James Bullen, aged 30; disease or hurt, pain in his chest, difficulty breathing and cough when in bed, a little symptomatic fever. Taken ill, 6 November 1798, cruising off Cadiz. Treatment continues on folio 31. Discharged to Gibraltar Hospital, 24 November 1798.

Folio 27: Joseph Driver, Seaman, aged 21; disease or hurt, pain in his breast and spitting up blood. Taken ill, 8 November 1798, cruising off Cadiz. Discharged to duty, 17 December 1798.

Folio 30: William Mitchell, Boatswain’s Mate, aged 23; disease or hurt, pain in head and back, cold shivering, sickness and vomiting. Taken ill, 13 November 1798, cruising off Cadiz. Discharged to duty, 25 November 1798.

Folio 30: John Jones, Seaman, aged 22; disease or hurt, a violent blow on the back of the hand, causing tumefaction and lacerating the skin. Taken ill, 15 December 1798, Gibraltar Bay. Treatment continues folio 36a. Discharged to duty, 6 March 1799. Remarks on folio 36a that he has been found to be using a ligature above the elbow to produce swelling.

Folio 32: William Frost, Marine, aged 38; disease or hurt, violent shock to his back from a fall down the ladder, vomiting and pain in the abdomen. Taken ill, 20 November 1798, cruising off Cadiz. Treatment continues folios 36, 41and 51. Discharged to duty, 20 February 1799.

Folio 33: Lieutenant Forbes, aged 25; disease or hurt, great debility, pains in head and limbs, thirst. Taken ill, 25 November 1798, cruising off Cadiz. Discharged to duty, 4 January 1799. Had just joined the ship and was ill for a fortnight before.

Folio 34: Thomas Dill, Seaman, aged 23; disease or hurt, severe pain in sides and chest, difficulty breathing, with a little cough. Taken ill, 10 December 1798, at sea near Gibraltar. Discharged to duty, 30 December 1798.

Folio 35: William Bulkley, Marine, aged 32; disease or hurt, cough, violent pain in chest, headache, fever with great thirst and pain in limbs. Taken ill, 10 December 1798, at sea near Gibraltar. Discharged to duty, 19 January 1799. Is a man who drinks hard in consequence of which he is a good deal debilitated.

Folio 36a: John Jones, treatment continues. Discharged to duty 6 March 1799. Remarks that he had been using a ligature to produce swelling in his arm.

Folio 37: John Fletcher, Seaman, aged 40; disease or hurt, general pains in his limbs, cold shivering, thirst, with vomiting and pain in his bowels. Taken ill, 17 December 1798, at sea near Ceuta. Discharged to duty, 25 December 1798.

Folio 37: Corporal McGrath, Marine, aged 32; disease or hurt, cold shiverings, pain in the head and limbs, vomiting and some pain in bowels. Taken ill, 24 December 1798, at sea near Cadiz. Treatment continues folio 40. Discharged to duty, 12 January 1799.

Folio 38: John Moms, Seaman, aged 28; disease or hurt, pains in head and limbs, cold shivering and vomiting. Taken ill, 19 December 1798, at sea near Ceuta. Discharged to duty, 25 December 1798.

Folio 38: William Thomas, Seaman, aged 20; disease or hurt, headache, thirst, pain in the back, griping pains in bowels. Taken ill, 19 December 1798. Discharged to duty, 30 December 1798.

Folio 39: Nathaniel Saunders, Seaman, aged 26; disease or hurt, hurt to the lower part of the back from a fall, 'appeared to be in excruciating torture'. Taken ill, 26 December 1798, at sea near Cadiz. Discharged to duty 1 March 1799.

Folio 40: Corporal McGrath, treatment continued. Discharged to duty 12 January 1799.

Folio 41: Thomas Smith, Seaman, aged 28; disease or hurt, griping pain in bowels, costiveness, vomiting, headache. Taken ill, 28 December 1798, at sea off Cadiz. Discharged to duty 4 January 1799.

Folio 45: Mr Martin, Midshipman, aged 22; disease or hurt, cold shivering, pain in limbs, headache and great thirst. Taken ill, 14 January 1799, at sea near Cadiz. Discharged to duty, 17 January 1799.

Folio 46: William Lindsay, Seaman, aged 26; disease or hurt, tumour under the deltoid muscle. Taken ill, 27 December 1798, at sea near Cadiz. Discharged to duty, 27 February 1799. Had concealed the tumour for some months but it had grown in the last month and the muscle contracted so as to make it difficult to use his arm.

Folio 47: Thomas Smith, Marine, aged 41; disease or hurt, broken rib and bruising from a fall. Taken ill, 2 January 1799, at sea near Cadiz. Discharged to duty, 29 January 1799.

Folio 48: Thomas Elliott, Seaman, aged 21; disease or hurt, pain in his limbs, cold shivering, griping pains in bowels with purging, the discharge a thin greasy kind of mucus, has brought off some bile. Taken ill, 5 January 1799, at sea near Cadiz. Discharged to duty, 21 January 1799.
