Description

Folios 17-18: Thomas Foley, aged 18; disease or hurt, general debility, languor and lassitude, oppression and anxiety, no appetite, nausea and vomiting, headache, face and skin sallow, eyes yellow, tongue brown. Put on sick list, 18 June 1825, at sea. Discharged cured, 4 July 1825.

Folio 18: Norah Regan, aged 13; disease or hurt, headache, nausea and retching, pain of bowels with costiveness for some days, tongue furred white, skin hot and dry, pulse very quick, much languor and restlessness, much thirst with anxiety, no appetite. Put on sick list, 19 June 1825, at sea. Discharged cured, 26 June 1825.

Folios 18-19: Julia Mahony, aged 10; disease or hurt, violent headache, nausea and vomiting, pain at stomach, of limbs and joints, want of appetite and thirst, skin hot and dry, tongue white, pulse quick and small. Put on sick list, 19 June 1825, at sea. Discharged cured, 5 July 1825.

Folio 19: Mary Slattery, aged 24, married; disease or hurt, great headache, heat of skin and pain of bowels, slept none and was very restless. Put on sick list, 20 June 1825, at sea. Discharged cured, 26 June 1825.

Folios 19-20: Judith Slattery, aged 3; disease or hurt, troublesome diarrhoea for several days, very drowsy and debilitated. Put on sick list, 20 June 1825, at sea. Discharged cured, 6 July 1825.

Folio 20: Nancy Mahony, aged 9; disease or hurt, headache, pain of stomach, nausea and vomiting, skin hot and dry, tongue white, much thirst, no appetite, languor, lassitude and aversion to being disturbed. Put on sick list, 21 June 1825, at sea. Discharged cured, 30 June 1825.

Folios 20-21: Dennis Shea, aged 18 months; disease or hurt, considerable cough with hurried and difficult respiration, skin hot and at times perspires freely, bowels open, stools greenish, lips pale. Put on sick list, 20 June 1825, at sea. Died, 28 June 1825. The Surgeon reports that the mother would not allow the baby's dirty clothes to be changed.

Folio 21: Michael Regan, aged 6; disease or hurt, severe headache and pain of eyes which cannot bear the light, face flushed, nausea and frequent vomiting, skin very hot and dry, pulse small and quick. Put on sick list, 21 June 1825, at sea. Discharged cured, 28 June 1825. Slept with his sister’s generally but changed to his older brother who had not been sick since coming on board just before he fell ill.

Folio 22: Bridget O'Brien, aged 1; disease or hurt, diarrhoea. Put on sick list, 22 June 1825, at sea. Died, 30 June 1825. The Surgeon describes her as a very delicate, weakly shrivelled child and has been declining for some months and the mother as a very lazy, dirty, bad nurse and unwilling to apply the child. 29 June 1825, the ship's being on shore has caused such an uproar among the people that it's parents neglect it and wish its death’.

Folio 22: James Slattery, aged 26, married; disease or hurt, fractured right clavicle, from slipping on the wet deck. Put on sick list, 22 June 1825, at sea. Discharged cured, 10 July 1825.

Folios 22-23: Margaret Groves, aged 13; disease or hurt, headache, pain of loins, limbs and bowels which are loose, much languor and drowsiness, tongue white, eyes yellowish, skin hot and dry, nausea and vomiting, pain at stomach. Put on sick list, 25 June 1825, at sea. Discharged cured, 20 June 1825.

Folio 23: Mary Shea, aged 12; disease or hurt, eyelids of both eyes are very much swollen, itching, red and painful, so that they cannot be opened nor the eyes seen, great discharge of tears, upper eyelids overlap the lower. Put on sick list, 29 June 1825, at sea. Discharged cured, 10 July 1825.

Folios 23-24: Hannah Twomy, aged 8; disease or hurt, mother states her child has been complaining since the night the ship went on shore of slight headache, nausea and vomiting, pain of bowels and constipation. Put on sick list, 4 July 1825, St Lawrence river. Discharged cured, 25 July 1825. On the 10 July 1825 could not receive as much attention as desirable because of being on a steam boat with 750 passengers, symptoms worsen. On 20 July 1825 suffering slightly from exposure in the batteaux between La Chine and Prescott.

Folios 24-26: Thomas Duhill, aged 12; disease or hurt, pain of bowels and purging, severe griping and tenesmus, nausea and retching, frequent purging, headache, restlessness and heat of skin. Put on sick list, 10 July 1825, at Lachine. Delivered over to Mr Reade the superintending Surgeon at Prescott, 27 July 1825. Drank a great deal of water, milk and beer while travelling between Montreal and La Chine on an excessively hot day and suffered purging and bowels pains. On the 16 July 1825, the Surgeon complains that he had been very ill on account of his mother giving him ale and that the parents would not allow him to apply a blister saying it was only teasing the child as he would not live till morning'. Eventually he prevailed and the boy improved, on the 18 July 1825 he notes that the parents 'are willing to do whatever I think proper, particularly the mother'. On the 20 July 1825 he notes that they left La Chine in open boats, 'batteaux', and there was a very violent rain and thunderstorm in the afternoon which again made Duhill slightly worse.

Folio 26: David Owens, aged 8; disease or hurt, almost constant purging, liquid and bilious, griping at umbilicus, nausea, headache, thirst, tongue whitish. Put on sick list, 10 July 1825, at La Chine. Discharged cured, 18 July 1825. Had suffered diarrhoea on the ship which returned when he was given beer and water to drink.

Folio 26: Anne Owens, aged 6; disease or hurt, diarrhoea, in consequence of exposure. Put on sick list, 10 July 1825, at La Chine. Discharged cured, 16 July 1825.

Folio 27: John Slattery, aged 1; disease or hurt, diarrhoea, had suffered on the passage to Quebec and it returned on the steamboat. Put on sick list, 10 July 1825, at La Chine. Died, 15 July 1825.
