Description

Folio 26a: 21 July 1802; [William] Moses and [William] Ellison are the only ulcers patients on the list [treatment] was much accelerated by the application of quick silver in spot of nitre.

Folios 27-32: David Paterson, aged 27; taken ill at Amboina, sick or hurt, wrist swelling; taken ill on 27 July 1802, discharged 8 September 1802 to duty.

Folios 27-40: James Newman, aged 30; taken ill at Amboina, sick or hurt, bilious [on 29 July] he labours under rheumatism applied laxative and warm bath were used which relieved him and lessened inflammation; taken ill on 29 July 1802, sent 25 October 1802 to hospital at Bombay.

Folio 27: Samuel Cook, aged 36; taken ill at Amboina, sick or hurt, hurt loins; taken ill on 30 July 1802, discharged 6 August 1802 to duty.

Folios 27-31: John Myers, aged 38; taken ill at Amboina, sick or hurt, burned leg; taken ill on 2 August 1802, discharged 5 September 1802 to duty.

Folios 29-34: John Harley, aged 40; taken ill at Amboina, sick or hurt, bilious he is one of the carpenters crew was much on shore where he get his disease by drinking excessively a mixture of arrack and sago ayer; taken ill on 22 August 1802, discharged 19 September 1802 to duty.

Folio 29: Thomas Jones, aged 30; taken ill at Amboina, sick or hurt, bilious he was attacked with violent vomiting and purging before we sailed from Amboina attended with headache and excessive debility on the 6th day he became delirious with violent pain of the breast, he was on shore before he got sick induced me to think he drank cole water sold privately by the native; taken ill on 23 August 1802, died 31 August 1802.

Folio 31: 3 September 1802; [Robert Mann] is the only case of diseased liver the seton was used on board the Daedalus, I have seen it often [when] on board the Victorious but never observe any benefit from it, in this case I think it was of much service and I think may be useful where adhesion takes place.

Folios 32-36: John Groom, aged 20; taken ill at sea, sick or hurt, scalded thigh; taken ill on 8 September 1802, discharged 4 October 1802 to duty.

Folios 32-33: 7 September 1802; ol[um] cajeput purchased from Amboina was tried [on James Newman] during the night and morning which appear to give ease, the olum cajeput the Malays called minia kaioo pootee obtained by distillation from the leaves of kaioo pootee tree, the oil is of beautiful green colour highly fragrantand more agreeable to the patient than any external application in the class of stimulants, the medicine virtue of this oil is not well know the present price is 10 Spanish dollas a bottle at the place where it is made, few practitioner can afford putting it to the test.

Folios 34-35: 16 September 1802; these few cases of diarrhoea do not recover but degenerate into habitual flux owing to their being hard drinkers while at Amboina, from our sailing from there few complaints except a few ulcers and those with dimness of sight [which] very frequent in India the most serviceable application was spt of wine and camphor diluted.

Folios 35-38: Robert Bishop, aged 36; taken ill at sea, sick or hurt, debility he was an old India soldier served 10 years in the country since he came on board appeared sickly and debilitated on the passage to Amboina he was left at Molacca hospital as invalided on joining the ship again was attacked with difficulty of breathing and general debility, put no confidence in any thing he took saying he was poisoned while in the company’s service by a native women; taken ill on 28 September 1802, died 13 October 1802.
