Description

Folio 15: 23 April 1802; those ulcers peculiar to Amboina spread rapidly in the course of 2 or 3 days, there was not any application that will stop their progress until all the diseased part cames off inflammation of the most painful kind accompany in every ulcer of this climate, at the beginning emollient poultice are [as far as] can observe the best applications in the incipient stage of these ulcers [which] bring off the diseased part in a few applications.

Folio 16: 28 April 1802; [John Husband] is the only confirmed scurvy case during the past six months, although the crew were mostly on salted provisions they have had fruits and vegetables at intervals here [at Amboina] and at China many of the men laid a stock of yams and pumpkins, to which I attribute the absence of scurvy.

Folios 16-17: James Brown, aged 32; taken ill at Amboina, sick or hurt, scrobulous ulcer on face he [also] had an old venereal complaint which effected him often his ulcer made progress in a few days; taken ill on 2 May 1802, sent 9 May 1802 to hospital at Amboina.

Folios 16-18: William Stevenson, aged 40; taken ill at Amboina, sick or hurt, lumbago; taken ill on 3 May 1802, discharged 15 May 1802 to duty.

Folios 16-17: Charles Arvin, aged 43; taken ill at Amboina, sick or hurt, cold; taken ill on 3 May 1802, sent 7 May 1802 to hospital at Amboina.

Folios 16-17: Santo Pasco, aged 30; taken ill at Amboina, sick or hurt, cold; taken ill on 6 May 1802, discharged 11 May 1802 to duty.

Folio 16: 3 May 1802; the ship's company received extra fruit and vegetables consisting of pine apples, binanas [bananas], pumpkins, yams and various kind of greens the effect of fruit was manifest upon the ulcer patients and some good effect on others different complaints, the ship have been 8 months since we sailed from Madras on salt provisions.

Folios 17-18: Pindar Eades, aged 22; taken ill at Amboina, sick or hurt, diarrhoea; taken ill on 9 May 1802, discharged 16 May 1802 to duty.

Folio 17: William Birch, aged 30; taken ill at Amboina, sick or hurt, cold; taken ill on 10 May 1802, date of discharge [?].

Folios 17-18: 9 May 1802; the cold and diarrhoea were contracked in consequence of excessive heat by day with heavy rain a great number of men being exposed on shore to the sun as well as rain the symptoms consisted of violent headache vomiting and tenesmus with or without purging I give them Emetics on the first attack.

Folios 18-19: James Cook, aged 33; taken ill at Amboina, sick or hurt, cold; taken ill on 15 May 1802, discharged 22 May 1802 to duty.

Folios 18-19: Joseph Stevenson, aged 24; taken ill at Amboina, sick or hurt, cold; taken ill on 18 May 1802, discharged 29 May 1802 to duty.

Folios 18-19: 15 May 1802; the ulcers of Amboina are different from all the ulcers that I have seen before, a small pimple or scratch will degenerate into an extensive ulcer in the caurse of 48 hours until the whole of the fleshy substance is destroyed, they seems to have no application that will stop their progress, the most probable causes of these are ascribed to an excessive use of sago ayer a liquor obtained from the gumoote tree or bad arrack sold by native and aided by the moisture of the climate.

Folios 19-20: 26 May 1802; all the colds on the list are contracted in the consequence of heavy rain which they exposed themselves to, [I give] and emetic on the first attack with perspirations afterwards and keeping the bowels open commonly recovers them in 4 or 5 days.
