Administrative / biographical background

From 1554 to 1832 stewards and lessees of crown manors were required to transmit duplicates of their manor court rolls (perhaps to provide a record of land transactions within each manor by copyhold tenants) to the Office of the Auditors of Land Revenue.

Not all rolls were sent in, and some that were appear to have been passed on to the purchasers of those crown manors. Some earlier rolls were also submitted. From 1832, court rolls from crown manors were supposed to be submitted to the commissioners of woods, forests and land revenues.
