Folio 9: 26 August 1815; Malta Harbour, fever having become very frequent on board, I shall offer general remarks on the cause, symptoms and cure of this disease [since] We arrived here on the 11 August the ship was then extremely healthy on the 16 August the ship needing repairs was ordered up nearer the dock yard a situation in which the sea breeze reaches, on the 20 August we had 7 people attacked with fever the fever was of bilious remittent kind the symptoms were various in different cases, complained at first of headache in other cases cough with pain in the breast and difficulty of breathing and other febrile symptoms, blood letting was used in both case with great advantage all the symptoms disappeared, [which] I considered them as convalescent, but soon I found that the disease returned as violent as before bleeding were again used and I gave calomel in the intermission in large and repeated dose and found it completely successful in a number of cases those that were obstinate or severe I instantly sent to hospital, some of these case the intermissions were so evident, as to had Mr Allen surgeon of the hospital to the employment of bark with complete success, on the 28 August through my representation the ship was removed into a healthy situation. There are 32 received into the list, in which 14 sent to hospital, 18 discharged to duty.
