Description

Folios 1-9: James Kinsella, private soldier of the 40th Regiment; disease or hurt, ulcer on the calf of the right leg. Taken ill, 24 August 1823 at sea. Discharged to duty on 31 October 1823.

Folios 3-4: Joseph Smith, convict, aged 38; disease or hurt, epileptic symptoms. Taken ill, 28 September 1823 at Cove of Cork. Discharged 2 October 1823.

Folio 3: 30 September 1823: several of the convicts are labouring under constipated bowels.

Folio 4: 30 September 1823: several of the convicts are affected with slight catarrhal complaints.

Folios 4-5: John Maikin, convict, aged 16; disease or hurt, catarrh. Taken ill, 4 October 1823 at sea. Discharged 12 October 1823, quite well.

Folio 5: John Quinn, convict, aged 53; disease or hurt, acute pain in the head and heart. Taken ill, 10 October 1823 at sea. Discharged 14 October 1823.

Folios 6-8: William Moore, private soldier of the 40th Regiment, aged 21; disease or hurt, severe pain in the head, back and limbs. Taken ill, 15 October 1823 at sea. Discharged 23 October 1823 to duty.

Folios 6-8: Patrick Corcoran, convict, aged 17; disease or hurt, pain in the headand breast with a short dry cough and difficult respiration. Taken ill, 16 October 1823 at sea. Discharged 23 October 1823 to duty.

Folios 7-8: Maikin, boy; disease or hurt, epilepsy. Taken ill, 20 October 1823 at sea. Discharged 24 October 1823, quite well.

Folios 5-10: Howell Evans, private soldier of the 40th Regiment, aged 37; disease or hurt, vertigo. Taken ill, 11 October 1823 at sea. Discharged 5 November 1823.

Folios 9-18: Edward James Burke, convict, aged 27; disease or hurt, phthisis pulmonalis. Taken ill, 26 October 1823 at sea. Discharged 9 December 1823.

Folios 10-13: Andrew Murphy, convict, aged 60; disease or hurt, severe pain in the bowels. Taken ill, 3 November 1823 at sea. Discharged 21 November 1823.

Folios 13-15: Michael Kearney, convict, aged 28; disease or hurt, severe griping pains in the belly, with sickness and vomiting. Taken ill, 19 November 1823 at sea. Discharged 31 November 1823.

Folio 15: Richard Ambrose, convict, aged 46; disease or hurt, severe pain in the belly and slight pyrexia. Taken ill, 27 November 1823 at sea. Discharged 1 December 1823.

Folios 16-18: Michael Kearney, convict, aged 28; disease or hurt, pain in belly. Taken ill, 3 December 1823. Discharged 11 December 1823.

Folio 4: 5 October 1823: The applications of the cathartic medicines continues very numerous and in some cases the cathartic mixture has failed in its effect from its being rejected by the stomach.

Folio 5: 12 October 1823: Several convicts affected with constipation of the bowels for which they take the better purging mixture.

Folio 6: 13 October 1823 (continued): Several convicts now complain of various slight ailments, some of constipated bowels, some of slight diarrhoea and others of slight catarrhal affections none of which appear to require particular treatment or notice in this journal.

Folio 7: 16 October 1823: Several convicts affected with slight catarrhal complaints but which do not appear to require particular treatment.

Folio 8: 23 October 1823: Three of the convicts found to be labouring with slight symptoms of scurvy such as spongy gums which readily bled, on rubbing them fully. Foetid breath with small purple coloured spots about the roots of the hairs on the limbs, more particularly in the hams. The lemon juice and sugar is issued to those men in the proportion of six ounces of the former and two ounces of the latter daily.

Folio 9: 30 October 1823: Several convicts affected with diarrhoea. It is slight and appears to require but little treatment.

Folio 9: 1 November 1823: Diarrhoea continues to prevail generally among the convicts some cases of which require some gentle laxative medicine.

Folios 10-25: Patrick Harrington, convict, aged 50; disease or hurt, several large scrophulus ulcers on the left thigh. Taken ill, 3 November 1823 at sea. Discharged 19 January 1824 to the hospital.

Folios 10-24: Michael Oliver, convict, aged 62; disease or hurt, a feeble old man is put on the sick diet being unable to use the usual rations having lost the whole of his teeth to have soup and half a pint of wine daily. Taken ill, 5 November 1823 at sea. Last entry 10 January 1824.

Folios 11-13: John Mulligan, convict, aged 30; disease or hurt, cholera morbus. Taken ill, 7 November 1823 at sea. 19 November 1823, much better.

Folios 11-22: Martin Cavenagh, convict, aged 21; disease or hurt, fever, griping pain in the belly with frequent loose stools and much fever. Taken ill, 10 November 1823 at sea. Died 6 January 1824.

Folio 12: Joseph Smith, convict, aged 38; disease or hurt, epilepsy. Taken ill, 13 November 1823. Discharged 15 November 1823.
