These records arise from the duties of the law officers of the crown in connection with applications for patents for inventions. Many of them relate to work imposed upon them by the Patents for Invention Act 1852, formerly known as the Patent Law Amendment Act. This work was later transferred to the comptroller general of patents under the Patents, Designs and Trade Marks Act 1883.
Caveats against the issue of letters patent, particulars of inventions, proceedings concerning the granting of letters patent and disclaimers and opposition thereto, and other miscellaneous papers are included.
