William Wesley Pole. Ask that the relevant part of the 8th Report of the Commissioners of Naval Revision is referred to the Committee of Shipwright Officers sitting at Portsmouth for their consideration of proposals to pay Workmen by Task and by the Day, the proposed rates of daily pay, in lieu of the current system, and whether they may be carried into effect without material dissatisfaction. Are sending a copy report of Shipwright Officers at Portsmouth covering the proposal for workmen to be lent from one yard to another, and for a Quarterman to accompany them, to discuss the need to grant Shipwrights and Caulkers an allowance for sleeping afloat and for the Indenture of Apprentices and the position of their instructors, what is to be paid by the parents and a table showing the several classes and rates thought right for Shipwrights in Peace and War. The method now in use of Shoaling the Task and Job gangs will be better for executing the various works than that proposed by Mr Tucker.
