Description (What the record is about)
-
William Wellesley Pole. Mr Harkness has asked for payment for the services of the armed Schooner Trafalgar. From the memorial presented to Secretary Canning, it appears the ship was taken up by Lord Strangford for proceeding immediately with dispatches for England. She was kept cruising by order of Sir Sidney Smith until November when she was sent to the Port of Lisbon as a flag of truce. Because of the delay, Lord Strangford represented to Lord Gambier that the owner should receive additional compensation. So far he had received neither freight nor compensation. The vessel had also been employed on services directed by Sir Sidney Smith until the beginning of December, arriving at Cork at the end of December. An extra expense has been incurred. In light of an order by Sir Sidney Smith and the circumstances certified by Sir James Gambier, agree £250 is a fair and reasonable compensation in addition to the sum agreed for freight.
