Description (What the record is about)
-
George Ogilvie, late Surgeon of the Armiston. The case of Mr. Wilkins, 1st Lieutenant of the Athenienne was affected with colica pectorum. Reports the daily symptoms and treatment given on the Armiston. The symptoms suggest it was due to lead and the description of colica pectorum given by Dr. Hunter in his work 'Diseases of the Army in Jamaica' confirms that lead is the cause. The water on the Athenienne is kept in butts and emptied into the cisterns daily but the cisterns were not completely emptied or cleaned daily and a quantity of putrified water was left which acted upon the lead. At times 30 or 40 of the crew were on the sick list including the Surgeon, the Master and the Purser
