Description (What the record is about)
-
Philip Stephens. Commodore Mackenzie, Commander in Chief in the Medway and Captain of the Ardent, informs us that because of the orders for assembling a Court Martial for the trial of Daniel Brown, a deserter, he has applied to the Chatham Officers for the usual allowance of Baize for Court Martial cloth, agreeable to the custom of the Service but was told that as the Ardent was only fitted as a private ship, no such allowance could be made. The ships on board which Messrs. Proby and Gambier hoisted their Broad Pendants were not fitted in any other manner from the Guardships nor were they supplied with baize cloth on holding Courts Martial. It is usual to cover a table with the kersey in the charge of the Boatswain of the ship
