Description (What the record is about)
-
Philip Stephens. Commissioner Hanway informs us that a French gentleman, calling himself Comte de Chabrillan, on his way to Dover, stopped in a post chaise near the new stairs, where he left his servant and hired a boat with two boys, from whence he went with the Post Boy down the River below the Chatham Hulk, which lies opposite to the jetty head. They came on shore and passed over the booms of the old single and south dock and ahead of the Barfleur, making their way to the dock gate, where he was stopped by the Porter and confined The Commissioner examined him and informs us he has ordered the Warder to be discharged and has applied to the Commanding Officer of the Marines for a Court Martial on the Centinel for having performed his duty so negligently.
