Administrative / biographical background

The Committee on the Age of Majority was appointed by the Lord Chancellor in July 1965 under the chairmanship of The Right Honourable Mr. Justice Latey. Its terms of reference were to consider the minimum age at which young people should be able to marry; to marry without consent; to own and dispose of property, and to make binding contracts; and at what age they should be no longer liable to be made Wards of Court. The report of the committee, was published in July 1967 (Cmnd 3342).
