Description

Folio 19: 1 September 1828; case no 229 [234] Simon's Bay, Cape of Good Hope, scorbutus, several convicts present incipient symptoms of scurvy, the gum are spongy and bleed a little, some have nodes on the heads and shafts of tibia or fibula. These are yellowish, brownish more or less livid. In two persons the cicatrix left by phlebotomy, performed a week or two ago is discoloured.

Folio 19: 2 September 1828; Simon's Bay, several convicts, otherwise healthy, have slight aphthosis of the mouth. The treatment consists of laxatives and gargle of sulph. Zinc, which prove extremely efficacious.
