The records in this series of Lord Chamberlain's Department record mainly refer to funerals, coronations, marriages, baptisms, and state visits of royalty, titled personages, and notable political, military or naval leaders. In addition there are records from Queen Victoria's jubilees and for occasions of thanksgiving.
They consist largely of entry books and loose papers. They principally comprise accounts of expenses, bills, and records pertaining to requirements for clothing, furniture, furnishings, services of workmen, victuallers etc. Also letters, memoranda, guest lists, service books, specimen tickets, programmes, ceremonials (printed orders), other printed material including newspaper cuttings, and gala books ("scrapbooks" of specific events, made up of the types of document listed above).
