The Cost of Living Advisory Committee was appointed in August 1946 to advise the Minister of Labour and National Service on the basis of the official Cost Of Living index figure and matters connected therewith. It was recalled at intervals (1946-1947, 1951-1952, 1955-1956, 1961-1962, 1967-1968, 1970-1971, 1973-1976, 1977, and 1984-1986) to consider whether any revision of the basis of the figure was practical or desirable. The membership of the committee consisted of representatives from the Ministry of Labour and its successors, TUC, Co-operative movement, independent academics, nationalised industries, other government departments (Statistics Divisions), British Employers Confederation and the Retail Distributive Trades Conference. From 1968 it was renamed the Retail Prices Index Advisory Committee. The Retail Prices Index Advisory Committee last reported in 1986.
