The Family Expenditure Survey commenced in January 1957, and has been in continuous operation ever since. The original aim of the Family Expenditure Survey was to provide the expenditure weights necessary for the construction of the General Index of Retail Prices, and this remains its main purpose. Since 1967, the annual sample has been about 10,750 addresses, drawn so as to represent all private households in Great Britain.
