Pieces 1-12 are statistical tables on form TU 31. Piece 112 is a general review of amalgamation and federation among trade unions. Pieces 113-121 are similar statistical tables, many on form TU 44, with historical notes, according to the Revised Industrial Classification introduced in April 1927.
For trade union returns collected by the Chief Registrar of Friendly Societies, see: FS 11 FS 12
The returns were collected by annual enquiry, on a voluntary basis, of the union or association secretaries, except where information was already available from the Chief Registrar of Friendly Societies. An article summarising the returns was published annually in the Ministry of Labour Gazette (and its successor, the Department of Employment Gazette), usually in the November or December issue until 1979, then in January.
