Selection and destruction information
The returns in pieces 13-111 have been selected to illustrate the kind of information sought on the membership of individual trade unions and employers' associations over a period of years.
Administrative / biographical background

The returns were collected by annual enquiry, on a voluntary basis, of the union or association secretaries, except where information was already available from the Chief Registrar of Friendly Societies. An article summarising the returns was published annually in the Ministry of Labour Gazette (and its successor, the Department of Employment Gazette), usually in the November or December issue until 1979, then in January.
