Description

Folios 23-28:

Folio 23: William Pool, aged 18, private marine; taken ill at the Downs; disease or hurt, feels sickness at the stomach with pain in the back part of the head the skin suffused with yellow and tunica albuginea quite discoloured no particular pain felt in the right hypochondrium either from pressure or otherwise; taken ill, 20 December 1808; returned 18 January 1809 to duty.

Folio 23: John Stone, aged 25, private marine; taken ill at the Downs; disease or hurt, feels pain in the throat and [?] with difficulty of swallowing on inspection the right tonsil was considerably swelled, ordered an emetic and after its operation a purge to be taken, diluted sulphuric acid used as a gargle; taken ill, 28 December 1808; discharged 16 January 1809 to duty.

Folio 23: John Parker, aged 25, seaman; taken ill at the Downs; disease or hurt, pain in the left side and has dry cough and difficulty of breathing it come on with a cold stage since which there has been a degree of pyrexia; taken ill, 3 January 1809; discharged 20 January 1809 to duty.

Folio 24: William Hutchison, aged 34, seaman; taken ill at Spithead; disease or hurt, pain in the left [?] close to the fundament. On inspection tumour and redness was very perceptible and there was considerable hardness and tension; taken ill, 12 January 1809; discharged 24 March 1809 to duty.

Folio 24: William Russel, aged 35, seaman; taken ill at Spithead; disease or hurt, headache, want of appetite and frequent nausea, attacked every morning with a cold stage attended by the usual symptoms of rigor, coldness succeeded by a hot fit; taken ill, 13 January 1809; discharged 10 February 1809 to duty.

Folio 25: Athenius Johnson, aged 20, seaman; disease or hurt, fell out the jolly boat whilst hoisting her on board and struck against one of the boat on the booms the right thigh was transversely fractured above the knee about 7 inches the leg of the same side was bruised and a lacerated wound of a small extent made on the tibia, the fractured thigh after being properly set, secured by splints and a roller; taken ill, 14 January 1809; sent to hospital 15 January 1809.

Folio 25: Samuel Munds, aged 25, private marine; taken ill at Spithead; disease or hurt, this man by a fall fractured his right clavicle close to acromion scapular the fractured ends were put into their proper situation and a roller put around both shoulders in the figure of 8 the arm afterward put into a sling; taken ill, 15 January 1809; discharged 10 February 1809 to duty.

Folio 25: John Colbert, aged 30, seaman; taken ill at Spithead; disease or hurt, this man was found ill in his hammock upon the morning of the 20th he was unable to speak and appeared almost insensible, his right side and the right extremities felt colder than any other part there was slight foaming at the mouth the coma was considerable there did not appear any stertor in breathing; taken ill, 20 January 1809; sent to hospital 20 January 1809 at Portsmouth.

Folio 25: Michael Welsh, aged 28, seaman; taken ill at, St Helens; disease or hurt, left leg severely bruised and wounded by a grating falling upon it. The wound was about 3 inches long, deep and from the nature of the accident lacerated, it was situated about 5 inches below the knee a little on the inside of the tibia it was poulticed three times a day during the sloughing stage which lasted until 10 January; taken ill, 23 January 1809; discharge 17 February 1809 to duty.

Folio 26: Henry Love, aged 19, seaman; taken ill at St Helens; disease or hurt, universal pain particularly in the superior and inferior extremities his pulse is full and strong he has a very slight cough the tongue white but little headache or disorder of the stomach. On 25 January a large tumour forming upon the right side nearly over the 7th rib; taken ill, 23 January 1809; discharged 23 February 1809 to duty.

Folio 26: Manuel Caton, aged 30, seaman; taken ill at St Helens; disease or hurt, this man a native of South America of a strong robust constitution complains of pain under the sternum, cough, a little humid, difficulty of breathing and headache; taken ill, 30 January 1809; discharged 17 February 1809 to duty.

Folio 27: Robert Hiam, aged 40, seaman; taken ill at Plymouth; disease or hurt, this man struck the skin of his right leg about 7 inches below the knee upon a part where there had been an old ulcer and where the skin was consequently tender against a chest in the cock pit considerable inflammation followed; taken ill, 1 February 1809; discharged 18 March 1809 to duty.

Folio 27: James Todd, aged 30, seaman; taken ill at Plymouth; disease or hurt, general pain but especially in knee joints and shoulders the pulse full and rather quick the tongue foul with thirst feels no headache or sickness at stomach the joints most complained of did not on inspection appeared red or tumefied upon the 15th the rheumatism became chronic; taken ill, 3 February 1809; discharge 12 March 1809 to duty.

Folio 28: Richard Welsh, aged 40, private marine; taken ill at Plymouth; disease or hurt, complains of cough attended with very copious expectoration of a thick yellow matter but without any pain in the chest or great straitness of it. The cough was worst during the night, the patient was debilitated with bad appetite and some time had night sweats, flannel to be worn next to the skin; taken ill, 5 February 1809; sent to hospital 3 May 1809 at Gibraltar.

Folio 28: William Dent, aged 18, private marine; taken ill at Plymouth; disease or hurt, outer ancle of the right leg was severely bruised and wound by getting between the combings of the after hatchway and a stancheon whilst carrying on duty, the wound was situated posterior to the ankle reaching to tendo Achilles of a lacerated nature about 11/2 inches in length the circumjacent parts were much bruised being tumid and black the wound after being washed with spirit was covered with dry lint; taken ill, 10 February 1809; discharged 14 March 1809 to duty.
