Report of William Alexander, [Sir William Alexander] on 1 individual petition (prisoner) on behalf of Thomas Pittam, convicted at the Summer Northampton Assizes, 3 July 1826, of assaulting John Clarke, constable of the parish of St Martin in the Fields, in the execution of his duty in the parish of Milton, County of Northampton. Character reference signed by John Clarke, prosecutor; [Frederick Montgomery; reverend; [Thomas Benton]; Hungerford Vowe; John Dent; John Cooper, churchwarden and overseer; John Phipps, churchwarden; William Gibbs overseer; William Marrott; and William Turland. Also included are notes from an earlier trial of Benjamin Cockerell [Benjamin Cockrell] who rescued Thomas Ingram (convicted of burglary and sentenced to transportation for life) from Constable Clarke. Evidenced supplied by John Clarke and George Tomkins, of Rotherford who suggests Pittam was involved in the rescue with Cockerell. Cockerell was found not guilty at the time as Ingram was arrested without a warrant. Grounds for clemency: Wife and 4 small children wholly depending on his support. Sentence: 8 months imprisonment. Recommendation: no mercy. Folios 149-154.
