Description (What the record is about)
-
Extract from a letter from Brussels of 18 October: reports from Dunkirk that all Irish and Scots regiments in the French service are to be embarked to go to the pretender's assistance. The French court has given orders that English prisoners are to be suborned to support the pretender.
Extract from a letter from Liège of 15 October: it has been learned through the Jesuits that once the French court sees the pretender in a position to sustain himself, it will join with Spain to send him powerful forces. Meantime, by means of the privateers of St Malo and Dunkirk, he is being sent Scottish and Irish officers, money and arms.
Letter from Dunkirk of 12 October: The little assistance being given the pretender is at the expense of Spain. A privateer has sailed for Scotland with men and munitions to gather information. Action between a Dunkirk privateer and an English snow. The pretender receives no assistance from France other than from privateers and smugglers. ff. 212, 213
