Report of W Garrow [William Garrow] on 1 individual petition (Mary Dear, prisoner's wife) on behalf of Samuel Dear, wheelwright, convicted at the Winchester Summer Assizes for receiving an oak tree stolen from The New Forest by John Cull. Evidences supplied from John Bowles, forester and keeper; William Reed; George Longman; Nathaniel Philpott; Joel Furey, vicar of Ibsley; James T Price, curate; Arthur Mist, church warden of Ellingham; Jeremiah George Coles, church warden of Ellingham; Joseph Payne, yeoman; W Westcott, surgeon; Alexander Brown, yeoman; Thomas Witt, yeoman; William Thomas, yeoman; Stephen Philpott, yeoman; John Philpott, church warden of Ibsley; Henry Head, church warden of Ibsley; James Ballard, wheelwright; William Hayter, yeoman; Stephen Curtis, yeoman; William Combs, yeoman; William Bessant, yeoman; John Day, shoemaker; Charles Curtis, yeoman; Capt G Henderson RN; John S Hayter, church warden; Henry Hayter, yeoman; William Hayter, yeoman; Henry Spratt, yeoman; and John Crumpter, [candle] winder are also included. Grounds for clemency: the prisoner was an honest and industrious character who had been enticed by others. Sentence: 1 years imprisonment with hard labour. Recommendation: none given. Folios 56-61.
