Administrative / biographical background

After 1728 attorneys and solicitors had to have served five years as articled clerks before being admitted to practice, and from 1749 (22 Geo II, c 46) it was necessary for an affidavit attesting the due execution of such articles to be filed in court within three months of execution. In the Court of King's Bench, such affidavits were allocated a serial number as they were filed.
