Files begun at Michaelmas 1589 to hold the latitats or other writs and precepts returned endorsed 'cepi corpora', which had previously been filed in the Brevia Billarum files (KB 147). The series continued until at least 1688, although there is an almost complete gap between 1632 and 1645.
Each file generally corresponds to a legal term.
The surviving files are numbered on a systematic basis. The first element is a reign number, running from 1 (Elizabeth I). The second is regnal year, the third represents the term within the year. The numbers used to represent the different terms varies from reign to reign, according to the point in the calendar year at which the new monarch succeeded to the throne.
