Description

Folios 538-543. Letter from John Harrop, Clerk to the Guardians of the Manchester Union to the Poor Law Commissioners containing a transcript of a resolution of the Board of Guardians concerning the proposed change in the Relieving Districts of Manchester Township. The proposals to: divide Manchester into five districts, rather than current four; to loose the 'Casual Office' currently filled by Mr J Wheeler and Mr Barber; that each Relieving Officer have charge of all cases arising in his district; setting out the boundaries of the five districts, being (1) Deansgate District, (2) London Road District, (3) Sucoats District, (4) St George's District and (5) Central District.

Proposed that: the Medical Districts be the same as the proposed Relieving Officers' Districts; given the proposed reduction in the number of Relieving Officers and transfer of duties to the Assistant Clerks, that changes necessary to certain salaries:

Joseph Wheeler's [Relieving officer] be reduced to £170 per annum; Richard Parker's (Relieving officer) be increased to £140 per annum; Mr Benjamin Brownsworth's (proposed Second Assistant Clerk) be increased to £70 per annum; Henry Kitchen (Head Porter in the Offices) have 24s per week; appointment of a junior assistant Clerk at 20s per week.

Confirming that the number of cases to each district have been equalized and providing current figures:

Deansgate (608), London Road (646), Sucoats (450), St George's District (558), Casual Office (699).

Proposed alterations would give: Deansgate (593), London Road (600), Sucoats (502), St George's District (581), Central District (547).

Further stating that Richard Parker, County Officer, would have charge of about 70 additional cases. Given the reduction in the duties of the Casual officer, proposed reduction in salary by £20 per annum.
