Description

Rolls recording the oaths sworn by attorneys on their admission to practice in the Court of King's Bench after serving a period of clerkship, kept under the provisions of an act of 1728.

The earliest roll in the series begins in 1752, so there was probably an earlier roll which has not survived, and there is also a gap from 1841 to 1860. The first three rolls give only the signatures of those taking the oath, but the fourth also gives their addresses.

Separated material

An alphabetical register of the attorneys, kept under the terms of an act of 1843 (stat 6 & 7 Vict, c 73), is held at the office of the Incorporated Law Society, which acts as registrar under the terms of the act. An attorney's oath roll of the mid 18th century will be found in KB 24/3.
