Under the Mining Industry Act 1920, the Mines Department was made responsible for the "collection, preparation and publication of information and statistics relating to the mining industry". A Statistics Branch was created within the Secretariat and General Division to do this work. It also took over responsibilities from the Home Office, which included the collection of annual returns relating to output, employment, accidents and plant and machinery in the industry. Particulars of the weekly employment and coal production of mines, monthly statistics of output and quarterly surveys of the condition of coal mining were also compiled; these were published by the Board of Trade.
