In reply to an enquiry reports that the fifteen companies of military labourers in his command were formed and attached to the Quartermaster General's Department on 25 August 1817, and that the men forming them were mainly discharged soldiers of the West India Regiments and liberated Africans. Some were subsequently transferred to the Ordnance. [With statistical return showing numbers of artificers and labourers attached to the each department, and arranged by island].
