Report of C Warren on 1 collective petition (14 people, including the prisoner and the prosecutor) on behalf of Edward Clarke convicted at the 'last' Chester Assizes in 1823 for the highway robbery and taking of a handkerchief and 5/8 in coins, property of James Shawcross on 12 May 1823. The prisoner had at the preceding 'Spring Great Sessions' been admitted as a witness against James Brooks, James Boon and William Sumner for highway robbery in which the prisoner was an accomplice. Grounds for clemency: youth (18 years) and the prisoner's mother has recently died. Initial sentence: death. Recommendation: no mercy. Annotated: 'Let the law take its course.....'. Folios 262-265.
