Report of Thomas Harrison, Chairman of the Surrey Quarter Sessions on 1 individual petition (the prisoner) and 1 collective petition (30 people, tradesmen of Horsemonger Lane, Smithfield, Fleet Street and Regent Street, London/Middlesex) on behalf of William Thomas/William Thomas Turner convicted at the Surrey Quarter Sessions held at Newington on 21 October 1822 for a [sexual] assault on William Wilson at Astley's Theatre, Lambeth on 18 July 1822. Evidences supplied by William Wilson, stable door keeper; George Smith, constable and John Smith, constable. There is a letter [signature illegible] regarding the settlement of the assault by the payment of compensation; and a sworn statement from William Duncan, the prisoner's employer. Grounds for clemency: the prisoner is innocent, he had his hands behind his back and was pressed into the victim by the pressure of the crowd, any assault was unintentional, the prisoner's attorney recommended an arrangement [compensation] to be made and the attorney miss-represented the prisoner in court. Initial sentence: 6 months imprisonment in the County gaol. Recommendation: none made. Annotated 20 Nov [November] 1822, Refused'. Folio 237-246.
