Description

Reports of Ben Kittmer and Marsham Elwin, County Magistrates on 1 individual petition (Dominicho Crosta, picture dealer and the prisoner's master) and 1 collective petition (9 people, the mayor of Norwich, 3 magistrates, the gaoler, chaplain, surgeon of the gaol and Francis Molton, Italian) on behalf of Guiliano Mantana/Guiliano Mantova/ Guiliano Montovo, Italian, 17 years, convicted at the Norfolk Quarter Sessions in July 1822.of enticing away Susan Hoffraff, a girl (under 10 years of age). Evidence supplied by Susan Hoffrath., James Brane, Samuel Albion and Mary Albion. There are sworn statements from William Hill, Susan Hoffrath's guardian/uncle stating that some of the victim's evidence was false; William Burton Jnr, shoemaker [x2]; and James Frederick Weaver; and two printed pages from The 'New Times' newspaper dated July 29 1822 giving an account of the trial. Grounds for clemency: the prisoner is of previous good character, has a poor understanding of the English language, the prisoner is innocent of the charge, no indecency took place and the child had played truant and made the story up. Initial sentence: 2 years imprisonment in the county gaol. Recommendation: free pardon. Annotated: 'The sentences to be remitted entirely' and 'Rem [remission] Prep [prepared], letter to Mr Kittmer, 2 Oct 1822'. Folios 166-183.
