Description

Report of W B Best on 4 individual petitions (Isaac Preston, the prisoner's counsel [x3]; and R F Elwin) on behalf of Joseph Parker/John Parker alias Joseph Atmor/Joseph Atmore convicted at the 'last' Norfolk Assizes of the rape of Susan Ripper. Evidences supplied by Susan Ripper. There are sworn statements from Charles Buckle [x2], William Mallows and Jaques Randall; Joseph Pyman, farmer and Robert Peck; Stephen Brothers; Mary Ann Tillet, wife of William Tillet; and Mary Lovely, wife of William Lovely; a part printed medical certificate from James Buller; and a covering letter from John Surtees. Grounds for clemency: no rape had been committed and the prisoner was unable to 'procure the testimony' of Mrs Tillet. Initial sentence: death. Recommendation: none made. Folios 122-149.
