The manor, borough and castle came into the Bigod family through Gundred, daughter of Roger earl of Warwick, the second wife of Hugh Bigod, earl of Norfolk (d. 1177). [GEC ix. 585-6] It passed directly to the Montagues in 1338 and was later part of the jointure agreed for the duchess Elizabeth in 1476.
