Administrative / biographical background

Mrs Alma Dunleavy, nee Brown, was born in 1923 in Irlams o' th' Height. Her mother Matilda Brown, nee Leigh her father John Brown both came from Pendleton originally. They married in 1914 and initially lived at an aunt's, Ann Wilson, in Broomhall Lane until 1919 when they got a house of their own in the same road. Donor went to St. Johns Church of England school and she worked as a clerk on leaving school with the mail order firm of J. Williams. During the war she was in the Land Army and for two years after the war she worked at Marshall Wards mail order company. Her first husband Norman Whitehead was born in 1918 and went to Salford Technical College to study electrical work. At age 16 he got a job with Sackvilles Printing Works as a "job settler" in the Manchester office.
