Description (What the record is about)
-
The Royal Sandrock Hotel was built c1790. It was extended and became a place of fashionable resort after the discovery of a spring in 1807/8. Among the visitors was Princess Victoria, who came with her mother the Duchess of Kent when she was 15, hence the addition of the title Royal from that date. By the end of the 19th century it was beginning to fall into disrepair, but its use was revived, and among the guests at the turn of the century was Signor Marconi, who stayed there in 1902, while he was working on the wireless transmitter at Knowles Farm. The building burnt to the ground in the 1980s
