Land tax assessments

INTRODUCTION

Duplicates of the annual Land Tax Assessments were deposited with the Clerk of the Peace under 20 George III, c.17 (1780) which stated that after 1 January 1781 no person would be qualified to vote in a county election for the return of Knights of the Shire who had not been assessed for the Land Tax for six months prior to the election. The documents comprise yearly assessments for parishes and tithings, signed by two assessors and confirmed by three commissioners.

The assessments were originally arranged in yearly bundles by Division. They are now arranged in bundles for each parish or tithing in each Division. The list is arranged alphabetically by place within the following Divisions: Alton North, Alton South, Andover, Basingstoke, Fawley, Kingsclere, New Forest East, New Forest West, Portsdown and the Isle of Wight. Parish names are given in brackets after tithings where appropriate. An index by place to all Land Tax Assessments, not only those found with Quarter Sessions records, but also those deposited in the Record Office by Clerks to the Land Tax Commissioners, may be found in the binder labelled "Land Tax Assessments".
