Description

The documents in these files relate to the intended construction of a new Mint in Russia with officials from St. Petersburg. Items 1-66 are incoming correspondence to Matthew Boulton. Items 67-90, located in the last two folders, are mostly copies of outgoing correspondence from Matthew Boulton, each organised by recipient and date, with original wrappers.

Correspondents include: Alexander Baxter, Russian consul; Count S. C. Woronzow, Russian ambassador to the Court of St. James; Reverend James Smirnove, chaplain to Count Woronzow; A. Schnese; Catherine Woronzow, daughter of Count Woronzow; Mr Shlatter [Schlatter], visiting Russian workman; and Basil Lizakewitz, Russian diplomat.

Also includes mentions of: Sir John Scott, General Attorney; Count Samiolow, Russian official; Baronv Aleksey Vasilyev [spelt varying ways, including: Alexis Vasilieff; Vassilieff; Vassillieff; Wassilieff; Wasilieff; Wassillioff], treasurer to the Russian Empire; Mr Deriabin; Mr Pieschell and Mr Brogden; Mr Kakoushkin, Russian student of mechanics; Count Suwozow [Suvorov], Russian military leader; Mr Sobakin, Russian student in Scotland; Lord Grenville; Mr Hammond; Richard Southern, Pearson, & Co. of Hull; Mr Menelaus, Russian visitor; Mr Weston; and Matthew Robinson Boulton.

This series also contains some translations of letters into French for the Count S. C. Woronzow. Most of the translations are probably completed by James Smirnove.
