Administrative / biographical background

The Badgeworth estate after passing through various hands, was acquired by William Ellis in 1788 and sold by the Viner Ellis family to John Russell in 1867.

John Selwyn Payne (1822-1880) married Ellen Harriet, daughter of John Russell of Badgeworth Court. J. Selwyn Payne was sixth son of Charles Payne, whose father, Charles, of Savanna La Mar, Jamaica, died at Clifton in 1821. The second Charles Payne was Mayor of Bristol. (Burke, Landed Gentry, where it is also stated that 'all records of this family' were destroyed in a hurricane, 1780).
