From: Matilda, widow of William of Charton ('ceritune'), knight To: Thomas, prior of St Gregory's Priory, Canterbury; the official of Canterbury; the penitentiary of Canterbury Refers to the composition arranged between Canterbury Cathedral Priory and William of Charton ('ceritune') her [husband] concerning the chantry of Farningham ('freningeham') and the maintenance ('sustentatio') of a chaplain there. Matilda has bound herself to Hugh, the priory's almoner and proctor to pay 2 marks a year for arrears and 160d a year for the present year, payable as specified, and 1½ seams ('summa') of wheat and 1½ seams of barley, commencing on the Easter following the consecration of Mgr Ralph of Maidstone to the bishopric of Hereford [1235], by the hand of her farmer Ralph of Chimhams ('chimbeha''). She can be compelled to make the payment by ecclesiastical censure. Sealed with Matilda's seal and the seals of the rector of Maplescombe (''mapeleschamps') and the vicar of Farningham [all no longer present.] Endorsed with description and note of registration in late 13th cent hands.
