Formed in 1963 by The Distillers Company of Edinburgh, in partnership with the Union Carbide Corporation of New York, U.S.A. B.X.L., as the new company became known, consisted of the six factories of the British Xylonite group, together with two Bakelite factories at Aycliffe, Co.Durham and Birmingham, and the Union Carbide Polythene plant at Grangemouth.
In 1973 Distillers sold their 50% share in B.X.L. to Union Carbide, who then sold the Xylonite factory at Brantham, Suffolk and the Aycliffe works to British Industrial Plastics, a subsiduary of Turner & Newell Ltd.
