Immediate source of acquisition
Written at Basel in 1442 for Cardinal Louis de la Palud (d. 1451) called the Cardinal of Varambon or the Cardinal of Maurienne. His armorial shield is at the foot of f. 1r. Bought by Sion College with part of £50 given in 1632 by Robert Parkhurst, citizen and alderman of London, as appears from the Sion Benefactors' Register (Sion L40.2/E64, p. 17) and from a label pasted inside the cover. Sir Robert Parkhurst (c.1569-1636), merchant, was Lord Mayor of London in 1635. Recorded in John Spencer's catalogue of the Sion College manuscripts in 1650 (Sion L40.2/E92 f. 2r). Spencer recorded two copies of this text (now Sion L40.2/L25-26), with shelfmarks A6 and Y8. They were evidently confused, since the present manuscript, A6, has A6 written within the front cover but Y8 written on the foredge. Both copies are recorded as having survived the Fire of London (Sion L40.2/E58/2 f. 31v). This manuscript appears to have survived the Fire of London because (for some reason, perhaps because the text was duplicated in the Sion collection) it was chained amongst the printed books; only the manuscripts on shelves V, X and Y were saved. Recorded at Sion College in Edward Bernard, 'Catalogi Manuscriptorum Angliae et Hiberniae' (Oxford, 1697) vol 2, no. 4067. Transferred from Sion College to Lambeth Palace Library, 1996.
