Description (What the record is about)
-
As well as deeds and estate papers relating to the Fremantle estate at Swanbourne in Buckinghamshire (and some relating to Gloucestershire), there is a large quantity of papers relating to the distinguished careers of various members of the family. They include the papers of Admiral Sir T F Fremantle (1765-1819), some of which relate to service in the Mediterranean and Atlantic, 1810-14, and of his brother Sir W H Fremantle, including correspondence with the Grenville family and papers as Deputy Ranger of Windsor Great Park. There are also papers of Sir Thomas Fremantle, 1st Lord Cottesloe, as Conservative party whip and Secretary to the Treasury under Peel and as Deputy Chairman and then Chairman of the Board of Customs between 1847 and 1873, including budget papers and correspondence with leading political figures (though these are not described individually). There is also correspondence relating to the agricultural labourers' strike in 1873 and the Labourers Chronicle of the same period.
