Description

Letter of James Massey, Worshipful Master, Joseph Pond, Senior Warden and Matthew Ryder, Junior Warden, Royal Lebanon Lodge, Gloucester to Robert Leslie, Grand Secretary, seeking information about two pounds paid by a Lodge member, Richard Morgan to Robert Leslie junior as relief for Robert Reed, a French Prisoner of War at Longwy, Department of La Moselle who is in great distress. Also seek a response to a request to the Grand Stewards concerning additional support sought for Robert Reed. Inform the Grand Secretary that Matthew Ryder will call on him to collect three Masonic certificates for Lodge members, Joseph Harris, Thomas Martin and William Monk. Endorsed with draft reply by Robert Leslie indicating that a request for assistance from Robert Reed directly to the Grand Stewards or signed by him would receive better fortune.

Administrative / biographical background

Royal Lebanon Lodge was granted a warrant by the Antients' Grand Lodge on 18 January 1799 to meet as No. 316 and named in 1801. It met at the Boothall Inn, Westgate Street, Gloucester from 1799. After the union between the Antients' Grand Lodge and Moderns' Grand Lodge in 1813 to form the United Grand Lodge of England in 1813, the Lodge received the number No. 401. In 1817 the Lodge moved to the Bell Inn, Southgate Street, Gloucester and in 1821 to private rooms in New Inn Lane, Gloucester. The Lodge was erased on 5 December 1838.
