Genre: Architectural Photography. Close view of a pillar, carved in the form of a woman, in the Airakkal Mandapa of the Minakshi Sundareshvara Temple. Lyon's 'Notes to accompany a series of photographs prepared to illustrate the ancient architecture of southern India' (Marion and Co., London, 1870), edited by James Fergusson, gives the following description of this photograph: '304 - is another woman with a baby in her arms, somewhat similar to that represented in 302 [print 12], but of a higher type of feature, and distinguished by her costume, especially by her head-dress, as belonging to a higher class. The ornament in front of the leg, below the knee, is worthy of remark.' Another copy at Photo 1000/29(2954).
