Description (What the record is about)
-
The Bristol Siddeley BS 605 rocket engine is a new solution to the familiar problem of obtaining thrust sufficient for aircraft take-off without impairment of cruise performance. It is a new engine having certain affinity in principle with a single power section from the Gamma Mk.201 which has proved so reliable in the RAE/Saunders Roe Black Knight. However the components have been redesigned and improved so as to take advantage of six years further experience in the development and production of rocket engines which include the BS Stentor, Gamma Mk.301 and PR.37. The propellants used in the BS 605 are 85% HTP and aircraft gas turbine fuel, which is also used in the Sprite, Super-Sprite, Spectre and Double Spectre. The turbo-pump derives directly from that of the Gamma Mk.201
